Jason Nixon doubts Smith's proposed sovereignty bill would pass
Alberta Government House Leader Jason Nixon says he doubts controversial legislation proposed a party leadership candidate would even pass in the legislature.
Nixon says the Alberta sovereignty act proposed by Danielle Smith would not only be illegal, it would be bad for business and politically catastrophic because it vastly overpromises what it can't deliver.
Smith is one of the front-runners in the race to replace Jason Kenney as party leader and premier in October.
She has promised that if she wins, she would bring in this fall a bill granting Alberta the power to refuse to enforce federal

PM Modi meets Droupadi Murmu, greets her on being elected as India's 15th President
A woman who hails from a minority ethnic community has been chosen as India's new president. On Thursday, Droupadi Murmu became the first president from one of the country's tribes and the second-ever female president of India.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Droupadi Murmu at her residence on Thursday and greeted and congratulated her on being elected as the new President of the country.Bharatiya Janata Party president JP Nadda was also present during the meeting.
Murmu will be 15th President of India.
The presidential contest was between Murmu and opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha.

Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann admitted to hospital in Delhi on Wednesday
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann was admitted to a hospital in Delhi on Wednesday early morning, said sources on Thursday.
Mann was admitted for treatment in Delhi's Apollo Hospital after he felt unwell.
The Chief Minister was checked for a stomach ache following which the doctors diagnosed him with an infection.
On Wednesday, Mann had congratulated the Police and the anti-gangster task force for successfully executing an operation against gangsters in the state after two Sidhu Moose Wala killers were gunned down after a heavy exchange of fire with Punjab Police near Amritsar on Wednesday

Delhi LG denies permission for Kejriwal's Singapore visit
Lieutenant Governor of Delhi VK Saxena has returned the proposal regarding the Singapore visit of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to attend the 'Eighth World Cities Summit and WCS Mayors Forum', and advised him to not attend a conference that is prima facie a conference of mayors not befitting attendance by a Chief Minister, said sources.
Earlier, Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and sought permission to attend the World Cities Summit in Singapore.

Father of toddler found dead outside Edmonton church released from prison
A man who was convicted of manslaughter in his young son's death in 2017 is out of prison after serving two-thirds of his sentence.
The toddler’s lifeless body was found outside Edmonton’s Good Shepherd Anglican Church in 2017.
Joey Crier and his then-girlfriend were each charged with second-degree murder in the death of 19-month-old Anthony Joseph Raine.
Crier was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to nine and a half years in prison in August 2020.
His sentence, however, was reduced to three years because he had been assaulted in jail and had spent much of his pre-trial time segr

Bronze statue stolen from St. Andrew Kim Church
Surrey RCMP is requesting public assistance in locating a statue stolen from a church in the Guildford area. On July 13, 2022 at 4:31 a.m., two suspects stole a bronze statue of St. Andrew Kim which was located on church property outside of the Education Centre Building at 10222 161 Street. The suspect used a dolly to transport the statue and load it into a camper van (see attached photos and videos).The statue is described as two metres tall and depicts St. Andrew Kim. 5 year old girl hospitalized with critical injuries after a crash between two cars in Vancouver
Police in Vancouver say a 5 year old girl has been hospitalized with critical injuries after a crash between two cars in the city's Kitsilano neighbourhood. They say the girl was hit while standing with her father and siblings when the two cars collided and careened onto the sidewalk. Police say no one else was injured and both drivers remained at the scene. The cause of the crash is under investigation and anyone with information who has not yet spoken to police is asked to contact the VPD.
