The campaign ran from 10 AM to 9 PM on Sunday September 14, 2025, and focused on key areas throughout the city. “Over the past several months, numerous complaints were received from the public over the blatant disregard for the rules of the road by a small group of individuals. From street racing to stunting to riding on sidewalks, these people were not only putting themselves at risk but the motoring public also. The

Freeland resigns from cabinet as she takes on new role as special envoy to Ukraine

Prime Minister Mark Carney has appointed Chrystia Freeland as Canada's new special envoy for the reconstruction of Ukraine. While Freeland announced her resignation as transport minister on social media today, she will remain in the House of Commons as an MP until the next election. She left today's regular cabinet meeting smiling and talking with Carney, but neither answered questions from reporters stationed outside the room. Freeland has been one of the most prominent government advocates for Ukraine on the world stage, and spearheaded efforts to seize Russian financial holdi

Hate crime legislation coming soon, bail and sentencing reform to follow: Fraser

Justice Minister Sean Fraser says he will introduce new hate crime legislation in the coming days, with reforms on bail and violent crime sentencing to follow. Fraser says the legislation will go beyond campaign commitments of protecting religious institutions from "obstruction and intimidation" and include measures for the broader community. During the election, the Liberals promised to make it a criminal offence to obstruct access to or threaten people visiting a place of worship, school or community centre. Police reports of hate crimes have been on the rise since the Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas att

Katzberg sets new competition record, defends men's hammer throw world title in Tokyo

Ethan Katzberg won gold with a competition-record throw at the world athletics championships today as Canada's recent dominance in hammer throw continued. Katzberg's second throw of 84.70 metres just stayed inbounds and shattered the previous championship record of 83.63. The 23-year-old from Nanaimo, B.C., also eclipsed his own Canadian record as he defended his world title and added to his Olympic gold from the 2024 Paris Games. Germany's Merlin Hummel took silver at 82.77 metres and Bence Halasz of Poland earned bronze at 82.69 metres. Katzberg's performance came a day after C

Robert Redford, Oscar-winning director, actor and indie patriarch, dies at 89

Robert Redford has died at 89. The Hollywood golden boy who became an Oscar-winning director, liberal activist and godfather for independent cinema died in Utah on Tuesday. His publicist didn't immediately provide a cause of death. After rising to stardom in the 1960s, Redford was one of the biggest stars of the '70s with such films as ``The Candidate,'' ``All the President's Men'' and ``The Way We Were.'' Redford played the wily outlaw opposite Paul Newman in 1969's ``Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,'' a box-office smash from which Redford's Sundance Institute and festival got its name.

Chrystia Freeland to leave cabinet for Ukraine envoy role: reports

Transport Minister Chrystia Freeland is expected to leave cabinet for a special envoy role with Ukraine, according to multiple media reports. The announcement could come as soon as later today. Freeland joined Prime Minister Mark Carney's cabinet meeting this morning in Ottawa but blew past the TV cameras and did not answer any questions about her political future. Freeland shook up Canadian politics late last year when she resigned as finance minister to former prime minister Justin Trudeau, a major blow that led to his resignation in January. Freeland sought Liberal Party leadership earlier

Canada’s 2025 Population Revised to Show Growth, Not Decline

Statistics Canada has revised its earlier estimate of Canada’s population, saying the country’s population increased by 280,810 people in 2025. Earlier this year, the agency’s preliminary figures suggested that Canada had recorded its first annual population decline. Statistics Canada later clarified that the initial figures were provisional and were based on incomplete data related to work and study permit extensions. After a second review and the inclusion of updated administrative data, the revised figures now show population growth in 2025. However, Canada’s population growth has s

Former Surrey Police Chief Norm Lipinski Seeks Judicial Review of Dismissal

Former Surrey Police Chief Norm Lipinski has filed a petition in B.C. Supreme Court seeking a judicial review of his removal from office, alleging that political interference by Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke played a key role in the decision. In the petition filed Monday, Lipinski said he was given no notice or opportunity to respond before being dismissed. He alleges the decision was not based on his qualifications or performance, but was politically motivated. Lipinski specifically accused Mayor Brenda Locke of opposing the transition from the RCMP to the Surrey Police Service and of making repe

U.S. Import Ban on Canadian Alcohol, Dairy Products and Motorcycles Takes Effect

A U.S. import ban on Canadian beer, wine, whisky, some dairy products and motorcycles took effect Tuesday. The measures are not expected to have a major impact on Canada’s overall economy. U.S. President Donald Trump said Canada could contact Washington within the next three to four weeks to negotiate a trade deal. Speaking to reporters at the White House hours before the restrictions took effect, Trump claimed Canadian officials would come to the negotiating table and express regret over what he described as Canada’s long-standing unfair treatment of the United States. Trump also repeated

Eby Targets Trump’s Trade War, Pledges to Double B.C. Critical Mineral Exports

B.C. NDP Leader David Eby targeted U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade war during an election campaign stop in Prince Rupert on Monday, pledging to double the province’s critical mineral exports over the next five years if his government is re-elected. Eby said B.C.’s response to the trade war is to sell its natural resources to more markets around the world, creating jobs and supporting the provincial economy. He also criticized the B.C. Conservatives, claiming they could cancel projects covered by agreements his government has reached with the federal government if they come to power.
