Lower Mainland mayors, including Surrey, endorse regional ride hailing licence

Mayors in British Columbia's Lower Mainland have reached an agreement on an interim business licence for ride-hailing companies that want to operate in the region. Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum, who has previously resisted the idea, threw his support behind the interim licence, saying it takes a major step forward in addressing the ``unfair advantage'' ride-hailing companies have over taxi businesses. The mayors' council on regional transportation, made up of 23 mayors, endorsed the proposed bylaw covering Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley and Squamish-Lillooet on Thursday, with the details rel

114 people have been tested so far in BC for novel coronavirus

BC's provincial health officer says this province and the country are entering a critical phase in the global effort to halt the spread of a new type of coronavirus. At a news conference in Vancouver this morning, Henry says anyone who visited China and departed before that country imposed recent travel restrictions may be incubating the flu-like virus, and could begin showing symptoms now. She says testing is underway in BC to identify anyone who may be at risk of developing the illness, and 114 people have been checked so far, with testing expected to continue for at least another week.

Ontario health officials say the province now has a third confirmed case of the novel coronavirus, bringing Canada's total number of cases to four. Ontario's chief medical officer of health says the latest case is a woman in her 20s in London, Ont., who travelled to the affected area in China. Dr. David Williams says initial testing in Ontario showed the woman was negative for the virus, but tests at the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg came back as ``weakly'' positive. Officials say the woman had no symptoms when she returned to Canada, only left her home to go to hospital, and s

Hockey players' sexual assault trial hears from former world junior teammates

The sexual assault trial of five former members of Canada's world junior hockey team is hearing today from other players who were on the 2018 team. Taylor Raddysh, who now plays in the NHL for the Washington Capitals, was asked what he remembers about several days in June 2018 when many of the team's members were in London, Ont., for a handful of events marking their victory in that year's championship. Court heard part of a transcript of a statement Raddysh gave in July 2018, in which he recalled seeing a woman in bed under the covers in the room of his then-teammate Michael McLeod in the ear

Day of mourning in B.C. as Vancouver festival attack suspect to face court

It's a day of remembrance and mourning in British Columbia today for victims of the deadly attack at a Filipino festival, as the suspect in the killings faces court. A community spokesman says the official day of mourning for the 11 people who died after an SUV sped through a crowded street will be part of the healing process but "certainly not the end of it." RJ Aquino with Filipino BC, the group that organized the Lapu Lapu Day event last Saturday, says the government's designation of the day of mourning shows the significance of the tragedy in the history of the province and the city. Alberta's Smith says she doesn't see 'an appetite' for provincial pension plan

The idea of Alberta opting out of the Canada Pension Plan isn't going anywhere -- at least for now. Premier Danielle Smith says she won't be putting the creation of a provincial pension plan to a referendum any time soon. Smith says she doesn't think Albertans have ``an appetite'' to pull out of the national pension program, and says the issue is further clouded by lack of detail on how much the province would get if it left. In December, Canada's chief actuary published a report saying Alberta's perceived stake of the Canadian Pension Plan's overall assets was substantially over
