TD Bank hit with $9.2M penalty after failing to report suspicious transactions

Canada’s financial intelligence agency says it has levied a $9.2-million penalty against The Toronto-Dominion Bank for non-compliance with money laundering and terrorist financing measures as the bank also faces compliance investigations in the U.S. The penalty by the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada follows on a $7.5-million fine against RBC and a $1.3-million fine against CIBC announced in December. The agency, known as Fintrac, says it imposed the penalty against TD for a range of failures including not submitting suspicious transaction reports when there was r

There's a limit to how much interest rates in Canada and U.S. can diverge: Macklem

Bank of Canada governor Tiff Macklem says Canadian interest rates don't have to match U.S. or global rates, but there is a limit to how much they can diverge. Macklem made the comments while testifying before the House of Commons finance committee today. The governor says Canada is nowhere close to the limit when it comes to how much Canadian and American interest rates can differ. The Bank of Canada is widely expected to begin lowering its policy rate in the coming months, while forecasters expect the U.S. Federal Reserve to take longer. The Federal Reserve held interest rates on Wednesday an

The BJP has canceled the ticket of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the former head of the Indian Wrestling Federation, who came into the headlines after the protest of women wrestlers, but what is special is that his younger son Karan Bhushan Singh has been made a candidate from the Kaiserganj Lok Sabha seat. Which is considered to be the hot seat of Uttar Pradesh. 67-year-old Brij Bhushan is a six-time Member of Parliament and his political dominance in the constituency is considered considerable. Last year, several women wrestlers including female wrestler Vinesh Phogat and Olympian Sakshi Mali

He alleged that his WhatsApp group created for election campaign has been blocked. Along with this, the parents have appealed to the Election Commission that all the cases registered against Amritpal Singh should be made public through the administration. Amritpal's father Tarsem Singh said that he has no information about whether these group

Students set up pro-Palestinian encampment protest at University of Toronto

A group of students at the University of Toronto say they have started a protest on campus to call on the university to cut its ties with Israel over the ongoing war in Gaza. The students say in a news release that they breached a newly-installed fence around an area on campus known as King's College Circle to establish an encampment in solidarity with the Palestinian people. They say they are joining students at other universities in the United States and Canada in setting up encampments to call on their schools to disclose their ties with the Israeli government and divest from Israeli compan

Many big leaders including Navjot Singh Sidhu distanced themselves from the election campaign

Despite the heated atmosphere of the Lok Sabha elections in Punjab, a large number of ex-MLAs, ex-district presidents and constituency in-charges of that faction, including the former president of the Congress party, Navjot Singh Sidhu, have so far kept their distance from participating in the election campaign of the Congress. So far, no concrete efforts have been made to convince and reconcile this faction by other leaders including the President of the Pradesh Congress Committee, which has started to be considered as a danger bell for the Congress. On the other hand, State Congress Commit

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh confirms his party will support the Liberals' federal budget

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh says his party will support the federal budget, ending any speculation that the party could pull out of its deal with the minority Liberal government. Singh says his party wanted time to digest the budget, but is ultimately voting in favour of it because of shared initiatives that it proposes. That includes creating a national school lunch program and providing free birth control and diabetes medicine for anyone with a health card. The Conservatives and Bloc Québécois have previously said they wouldn’t support the budget. The minority Liberals needed the support of

'Biological sex' sports bill is quickly quashed in B.C. legislature

A B.C. Conservative private member's bill to classify publicly funded sports teams and events according to the "biological sex" of participants, banning transgender athletes, didn't make it out of the starting blocks. The Fairness in Women's and Girls' Sports Act was voted down at first reading, a fate that's a rarity in the legislature. The majority New Democrats, joined by two Green Party members and two Independents, voted down the proposed bill introduced by Conservative Leader John Rustad. B.C. Conservative Leader Attacks Eby Government Over Forestry Decline

B.C. Conservative Party Leader John Rustad has accused Premier David Eby of blaming U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs for the province’s forestry-sector decline in an attempt to hide his government’s own failures. In a statement Tuesday, Rustad said U.S. tariffs are harmful and should be strongly opposed. However, he said forestry production in B.C.’s Interior began declining as early as 2016, long before Trump returned to office, and has now fallen by about 50 per cent. According to Rustad, poor provincial policies, permit processes that can take two to three years, and uncertaint

Trump’s Presidency Delays Quebec Sovereignty Referendum, Says Parti Québécois

Parti Québécois leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon says his party would not hold a referendum on Quebec sovereignty while Donald Trump remains president of the United States. St-Pierre Plamondon says the party still intends to hold a referendum on whether Quebec should separate from Canada during its first mandate if elected. However, he says such a crucial decision about Quebec’s future requires a clear and calm debate. He says the referendum debate should not be disrupted by American politics or unexpected announcements from the U.S. president. According to St-Pierre Plamondon, the unpredic

Poilievre Attacks Carney Government Over EV Mandate

Canada’s main opposition leader, Pierre Poilievre, has launched a strong attack on Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government over its electric vehicle policy. Poilievre alleges that while the government is moving to scrap the existing EV sales mandate, it is planning to bring back a similar requirement through the “back door” using tougher emissions standards. According to a notice published in the Canada Gazette, the government has recently started the process of repealing the previous EV Sales Mandate, which required 20 per cent of new vehicles sold in 2026 to be electric.
