Alberta to provide crime prevention grants as Calgary sees increase in shootings
The Alberta government says it will provide a total of $5.2 million to support programs that prevent crime and keep people safe.
Justice Minister Tyler Shandro says grants will be doled out to eligible groups over the next two years.
He says the money can be used for the delivery of community safety plans, youth gang prevention and exit programs, as well as plans that address emerging issues and trends.
Shandro made the announcement in Calgary, where police have already responded to 97 shootings in 2022.

Some services returning to Calgary Municipal Building after break-in incident
The City of Calgary says it is reopening some of its service counters at its Municipal Building after a break-in and fire earlier this month.
Services on the third floor of the building were affected by water damage because the sprinkler system was triggered.
The low-income transit pass, tax advisory and cashier services are back in the downtown building.
Officials say the planning and development service counter, which had extensive damage, will remain in its temporary location at the Whitehorn Multi-Services Centre until further notice.

Teen pilot sets age record for solo flight around world
A Belgian-British teenager became the youngest person to fly around the world solo in a small aircraft after he landed on Wednesday in Bulgaria, where his global journey kicked off five months ago.
Mack Rutherford, who turned 17 during the trip, landed on an airstrip west of Bulgaria’s capital, Sofia, to complete his task and to claim two Guinness World Records.
Along with becoming the youngest person to fly around the world by himself, Rutherford is the youngest person to circumnavigate the globe in a microlight plane.

Another case of gun violence in Calgary, Police are investigating
Police are investigating another case of gun violence in Calgary, this time it happened in the southeast community of Radisson Heights yesterday.
Calgary police have not released any information regarding injuries or the individuals involved.
Police say it is the city's 97th shooting this year.
On Monday, police were called to respond to a shooting in Pineridge that officials say involved two vehicles, but no was reported injured.
There were two shootings in the city on Sunday.

RCMP investigate after Leela Aheer's social media accounts were hacked
Alberta RCMP are confirming they are investigating after Leela Aheer, a candidate in the United Conservative Party leadership race, reported that some of her social media accounts had been compromised.
Aheer, who was elected in the riding of Chestermere-Strathmore in 2019, says she was shocked to discover that both her personal and public Facebook accounts had been hacked.
In a Twitter post, she called it a targeted attack and said there were inappropriate messages being sent through it as a result.

B.C. union agrees to resume bargaining talks
BC's largest public-sector union says it has been invited back to the negotiating table by government negotiators. The BC General Employees' Union says bargaining is expected to resume soon, but details are still being confirmed. The union says it's a ``significant development'', and a direct result of its members' job action, which will remain in effect until further notice. The Public Service Agency says there haven't been any reported negative impacts so far from an overtime ban imposed by the BCGEU, which represents 33,000 members.

RCMP warning residents in Merritt about a rise in phone scams accusing people of attempting to hire sex workers
RCMP are warning residents in Merritt about a rise in phone scams accusing people of attempting to hire sex workers and demanding large sums of money. Police say the scammers have been threatening people with death and in some cases have texted photographs of firearms and severed human body parts. Constable Ed Query says the public should immediately block the phone numbers of those that may have requested money in any form, including gift cards, cheques or money orders. Anyone who has been scammed is being asked to call police.
