RCMP are warning residents in Merritt about a rise in phone scams accusing people of attempting to hire sex workers and demanding large sums of money. Police say the scammers have been threatening people with death and in some cases have texted photographs of firearms and severed human body parts. Constable Ed Query says the public should immediately block the phone numbers of those that may have requested money in any form, including gift cards, cheques or money orders. Anyone who has been scammed is being asked to call police.

BC's police watchdog says it's investigating a police-involved death in Vancouver. The Independent Investigations Office says police received a report of a man acting erratically this morning. Vancouver police say the man went into medical distress after he was taken into custody following an ``interaction'' with officers and died at the scene. Shooting followed by a car chase and vehicle fire in Surrey

RCMP are investigating after an apparent shooting followed by a car chase and vehicle fire last night in the Newton neighbourhood of Surrey. Mounties say a silver SUV was chasing another vehicle described as a newer-model black sedan. They say in a release that shots are believed to have been fired from the sedan and that the silver SUV was found engulfed in flames soon afterwards. Anyone with dashcam footage from the incident in the area of 68th Avenue between 151st and 152nd streets around 10:30 p-m is being asked to contact police.

At approximately 7:00 pm on August 17th the New Westminster Police Department received a 9-1-1 call from staff at a local grocery store.
