Man, 41, arrested after allegedly stealing police car: VPD

Vancouver police say a man with more than 50 criminal convictions is back in custody after allegedly stealing a police car and taking it for a ride, endangering bystanders in a park on Sunday. Police say the cop car was allegedly stolen around 10:45 a.m. after officers were flagged down in East Vancouver to help a woman in distress. They allege as officers focused on helping the woman, the suspect got into the unattended vehicle and drove it toward a group of families at Templeton Park. VPD says the 41-year-old “prolific offender” was arrested about three minutes after the car was stolen.

NDP house leader says House dysfunction will be a factor in future confidence votes

NDP House leader Peter Julian says there's more his party wants to do in Parliament before the next election, but the current dysfunction continues it will become a factor in how they vote on a confidence measure. In just three weeks, two Conservative non-confidence motions have failed to bring down the government — but the Opposition promises more to come. The New Democrats have said they will decide how to vote on those motions a case-by-case basis. Julian accuses the Conservatives of being "agents of chaos" in the House of Commons. The government's legislative agenda has ground to a halt

Supreme Court upholds rules on passenger compensation in victory for air travellers

The Supreme Court of Canada has upheld rules that bolster compensation for air passengers subjected to delayed flights and damaged luggage on international flights. In a victory for air travellers across the country, the country's highest court unanimously dismissed an appeal by a group of airlines that challenged Canada's passenger rights charter. Air Canada, Porter Airlines Inc. and 16 other appellants had argued that the Air Passenger Protection Regulations launched in 2019 violate global standards and should be rendered invalid for international flights. The legal challenge, which kicked o

Ottawa must cancel or significantly reform temporary foreign worker program, says Eby

British Columbia Premier David Eby says the temporary foreign worker program should "be cancelled or significantly reformed" because the province can't have an immigration system that takes young people's jobs, while filling up homeless shelters and food banks. Eby says one reason B.C. is facing "significant fiscal headwinds" is because of "very high unemployment rates" among young people, linked to both the temporary foreign worker program and the international student program. He says B.C. is willing to "convene provinces that are interested in this issue" to have a "serious, grown-up" conve
