Bhagwant Mann government appoints chairmen and directors in several departments

The Bhagwant Mann government of Punjab is under the attack of the opposition parties after appointing chairmen and members of several departments, corporations and boards. The opposition parties allege that many of them are non-Punjabis, who previously worked for the Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi. In particular, questions have been raised on the appointment of two names, one of which is Reena Gupta, who has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Punjab Pollution Control Board and the other is Deepak Chauhan, who has been appointed as the Chairman of the Punjab Industrial Development Board. BC business leaders demand action to fix Canadian economy

A letter signed by British Columbia business leaders has been sent to every member of parliament across Canada, calling for concrete action to boost the country’s economy. The BC Business Council co-signed the letter with business leaders from Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. It includes calls for repealing proposed emissions caps for oil and gas, reforming the tax system and Canada’s regulatory system. The letter says our economy has grown very slowly in the past decade relative to its population, and Canada’s per capita GDP growth from 2014 to 2024 was the second-weakest. Business

Canada's inflation rate slows to slowest since September

Canada's inflation rate has slowed to its slowest since September. According to Statistics Canada, inflation in April rose to 1.7 percent from a year earlier, down from 2.3 percent in March. The sharp decline in inflation last month was due to the consumer carbon tax that was abolished in early April, while core inflation, i.e. grocery inflation, did not see any relief. The Bank of Canada mainly looks at core inflation to raise or lower interest rates. According to the Statistics Department, grocery prices rose by 3.8 percent year-on-year in April. It is worth noting that these latest inf

Putin not serious about moving forward on peace: Zelensky

Amid US President Donald Trump's claim of an early ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Russia of trying to stall its war in Ukraine. Zelensky said that Putin is not serious about moving forward on peace. It is noteworthy that Trump had said in a statement a day earlier after separate phone calls with the two leaders that Russia and Ukraine would soon start talks on a ceasefire. At the same time, Putin had said that he was ready to talk about a possible peace agreement in the future but did not respond to the demand for an early 30-day pause in the war. Mean

Biden has been diagnosed with prostate cancer

Former President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, his office said Sunday. Biden was seen last week by doctors after urinary symptoms and a prostate nodule was found. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer on Friday, with the cancer cells having spread to the bone. “While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management," his office said. "The President and his family are reviewing treatment options with his physicians.”

Federal Appeal Court grants B.C. ostriches stay of cull pending review

The Federal Court of Appeal has granted a stay that pauses the potential cull of nearly 400 ostriches at a B.C. farm. Court records show that a motion to pause plans for the cull, pending an appeal, was granted this afternoon in Ottawa. The owners of Universal Ostrich Farm in Edgewood, B.C., have been fighting an order from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to cull their flock after it was hit with an avian flu outbreak last year. Katie Pasitney, whose mother co-owns the farm, thanked supporters in a post on social media, saying the ``next phase of the battle'' will allow the farm to pus
