Major crimes detectives have joined a missing person investigation in British Columbia's Interior looking into the disappearance of a man that RCMP say is suspicious.Mounties in Quesnel say 33-year-old Louis Korkowski was last seen or heard from on May 4.Efforts to locate the five-foot four-inch, 110-pound man have led to a possible link with two vehicles, a green 2003 Ford Explorer and a grey 2007 Toyota Matrix.Police say the Explorer has a dented passenger door and licence plate KF087R, while the Matrix has black paint and peeling damage on the roof, sticker residue on the passenger door an

Ontario extends low hydro rates, emergency orders

British Columbia: Lowest increase in COVID-19 positive cases in weeks

BC is reporting only eight new cases of COVID-19 but four new deaths. Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry says that brings the total number of cases to 2,232 and 121 deaths. Henry says there are now active outbreaks at 22 long-term care centres but the one at Lynne Valley the first major outbreak in the province is over. She says the province has put the brakes on COVID-19 but it's too early for people to start planning play dates and expanding their social connections.

Stump Lake spilled over its banks, Highway 5A could be closed for weeks

Highway 5-A could be closed for weeks after Stump Lake spilled over its banks and flooded the highway about 40 kilometres south of Kamloops. Kevin Skrepnek, the emergency co-ordinator with the Thompson Nicola Regional District, says water levels show the highway closure could last days or even weeks. He says the reopening will be up to the Ministry of Transportation, which will factor in public safety. Skrepnek says some outbuildings and basements on nearby properties have also been flooded.

Man in police custody after climbing a crane in Downtown Eastside

A man is in custody after climbing a crane tower at a construction site on Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. Sergeant Aaron Roed says the man scaled the crane last night and was able to get into the operating booth and start the machine. Roed says power was cut before the man was able to move the crane arm or cause any damage. Officers then convinced the man to come down from his perch on his own and he was arrested without further incident.

New York state reports more than 1,700 previously undisclosed COVID-19 deaths

New York state is now reporting more than 1,700 previously undisclosed COVID-19 deaths at nursing homes and adult care facilities, raising the total in the homes to more than 4,800. Exactly how many nursing home residents have died remains uncertain despite the state's latest disclosure, as the list doesn't include nursing home residents who were transferred to hospitals before dying. There have been more than 19-thousand deaths in New York state since the beginning of the outbreak.

RCMP marine unit rescues 11 people after canoe overturns in Burrard Inlet

Eleven people, including several youths, were rescued from the waters of Burrard Inlet after a large canoe overturned near Ambleside Beach on Saturday afternoon, according to the BC RCMP. Police said officers with the RCMP Tactical Marine Operations Group (TMOG), who were conducting patrols in Burrard Inlet, received a distress call over Marine VHF Channel at about 3:30 p.m. on July 5 reporting an overturned canoe off Ambleside Beach. Four TMOG vessels were dispatched to the scene. According to the RCMP, officers arriving at the location found all 11 occupants clinging to the overturned canoe.

Report says Alberta has widest gender pay gap in Canada

Women in Alberta continue to earn less than men than in any other province, according to a new report from the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA). The report found that women in Alberta earn 64 cents for every dollar earned annually by men, compared with a national average of 72 cents. Looking at weekly earnings, women in the province earn 71 cents for every dollar earned by men, while the national average is 80 cents, according to the report. Police say six family members, including children, worked as a team to pull off a jewelry store heist in Calgary. They say the family went into the store at CF Market Mall last month. U.S. tourist dies after cyclist collision at downtown Vancouver crosswalk

A 72-year-old man from the United States has died after being struck by a cyclist while crossing a downtown Vancouver street, according to the Vancouver Police Department.
