Sunil Jakhar's 'advice' to PM Modi and Amit Shah about Punjab

Strike vote looms for Alberta nurses union as informal mediation talks unsuccessful
Alberta's nurses could soon find themselves on the picket line as recent talks with the provincial government failed to secure a new agreement.
David Harrigan, with the United Nurses of Alberta, says last month's informal mediation meetings were productive, but says the gap between the two sides seems too big to bridge.

Manitoba man acquitted 50 years after murder conviction
A Manitoba man convicted of murder 50 years ago has been acquitted. Clarence Woodhouse was found guilty in 1974 of fatally beating and stabbing a restaurant worker in downtown Winnipeg.
His lawyers say a confession Woodhouse supposedly made was in fluent English, although he primarily spoke Saulteaux.
The federal justice minister ordered a new trial earlier this year and today the Crown acknowledged the case was a miscarriage of justice.

B.C. NDP to unveil election platform, Conservatives promise to end insurance monopoly
B.C. NDP Leader David Eby is set to roll out the party's complete election platform as Conservative Leader John Rustad says his government would end the provincial insurance corporation's monopoly on basic vehicle insurance.
Eby has a news conference scheduled in Surrey as the province nears the midway point of the election campaign ahead of the Oct. 19 election day.
The New Democrats have already announced many components of the platform, including recent promises for an annual tax cut worth $1,000 for the average family starting next year, and a plan to fast-track factory-built homes.

Foreign interference inquiry to hear from RCMP commissioner today
RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme is slated to appear today at a federal inquiry into foreign interference.
It marks the second round of testimony at the inquiry for Duheme, who will be accompanied by other senior members of the national police force.
The commission of inquiry's latest hearings are focusing on detecting, deterring and countering foreign meddling.
The hearings, scheduled to continue through Oct. 16, are relatively broad in scope, examining key agencies as well as the experiences of diaspora communities.

Transport Minister sentenced to jail in corruption case
Singapore's Indian-origin former Transport Minister S. Iswaran has been sentenced to 12 months in jail on Thursday in a corruption case. They had received nearly 400,000 Singapore dollars' worth of gifts from the two businessmen as bribes over a period of seven years.
The investigation of this matter was completed by Singapore's Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau a year ago. The judge said that the former transport minister abused his position instead of fulfilling the duty of being a public servant.
