Police investigating found body
Port Alberni RCMP is investigating following the discovery of a deceased person in a local park on Monday.
On June 16, 2025, at 5:41 p.m., Port Alberni RCMP received the report of a body in Dry Creek Park. Frontline officers responded and located a deceased person with apparent injuries. Forensic Identification Services attended and processed the scene.
General Investigation Section has assumed conduct of the ongoing investigating and is working with BC Coroner’s Service to determine the circumstances that lead to this death. Based on the initial information the death is being treated as sus

Area restriction issued for Kiskatinaw: BC Wildfire Service
The B-C Wildfire Service says it has issued an area restriction around the Kiskatinaw (kiss-KAT'-in-aw) River wildfirenear the B-C-Alberta border.
The service says the restriction takes effect this morning and will last until October, restricting entry to a large swath of Crown land where the fire has spurred evacuation orders and alerts.
The wildfire service says the blaze is now more than 265-square kilometres in size, and the restriction bars people from entering unless they're travelling to and from home, using a highway or entering to support fire suppression activities.

CSIS says India is a continued foreign interference threat as Canada renews diplomacy
The latest annual report of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service says Indian officials and their proxy agents in Canada, engage in a range of activities that seek to influence Canadian communities and politicians.
The report comes as Canada renews diplomatic ties with India after Prime Minister Mark Carney met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G7 in Kananaskis, Alta. on Tuesday.
Last year both former prime minister Justin Trudeau and the RCMP linked agents of the Indian government to the 2023 murder of Canadian Sikh-activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Minor suffered serious injuries, taken to Edmonton hospital
Mounties in Alberta say an 18-year-old driver is facing multiple charges after a youth was allegedly pinned against a building by a truck.
St. Paul R-C-M-P say officers responded to a call for a collision at a convenience store early Saturday morning. When police arrived on scene, they found a youth still stuck between a truck and the building.
The driver has been charged with various offences, including aggravated assault, while the youth is recovering from serious injuries.

PM Carney travelling to Europe Sunday for NATO, Canada-EU summits
Prime Minister Mark Carney will travel to Europe Sunday to attend a pair of summits on NATO and Canada-EU relations.

Canadian population growth continued to slow with almost no increase in Q1: StatCan
Statistics Canada says population growth stalled in the first quarter.
The agency says the Canadian population rose by 20,107 people from Jan. 1 to April 1 to 41,548,787, the smallest increase since the third quarter of 2020 when it contracted by 1,232 people.
It was the sixth consecutive quarter of slower population growth after a decision by the federal government in 2024 to lower the levels of both temporary and permanent immigration.
However, immigration still accounted for all of the population growth in the quarter as there were 5,628 more deaths than births in Canada.

Premier Eby says deal to hire Chinese shipyard not "preferred" but will not interfere
B.C. Premier David Eby says he shares the concerns of union leaders who have criticized BC Ferries' decision to build four large ferries in China.
But Eby says he will not interfere with the company's decision to contract a Chinese shipyard owned by the Communist government to build four new ferries, calling the vessels "urgently needed" despite the deal not being his "preferred outcome."
The decision by BC Ferries, a company that operates independently of the provincial government but is wholly owned by it, has drawn widespread criticism from groups including the BC Federation of Labour.
