The Alberta government has approved a bid by the Enoch Cree Nation near Edmonton to build a private clinic to perform thousands of publicly covered hip and knee surgeries. Health Minister Jason Copping says the clinic is to be built by the middle of next year to reduce a backlog of orthopedic operations in and around the capital. The clinic will be a partnership between the Enoch Cree and Surgical Centres Inc., a private operator that runs seven clinics in Canada, including two in Calgary. A Belgian man faces charges after a suspect was caught with five kilograms of heroin in luggage at the Calgary International Airport. RCMP say the accused had arrived at the Calgary International Airport on a flight from Frankfurt, Germany on May 27, and was referred to a secondary inspection. That's when Canada Border Services Agency officers seized four packages containing the dope. Federal and provincial privacy watchdogs say the Tim Hortons mobile ordering app violated the law by collecting vast amounts of location information from customers. In an investigation finding today, privacy commissioners say people who downloaded the Tim Hortons app had their movements tracked and recorded every few minutes of the day, even when their app was not open. The investigation came after National Post reporter James McLeod obtained data showing the Tim Hortons app on his phone had tracked his location more than 2,700 times in less than five months. The Canadian Transportation Agency says Flair Airlines is Canadian. The ruling means the Edmonton-based upstart carrier can keep its operating licence. Canadian legislation allows no more than 49 per cent ownership of a Canadian airline by foreign entities. Police officials say four people have been killed in a shooting at a Tulsa medical building on a hospital campus. Tulsa police Deputy Chief Jonathan Brooks confirmed the number of dead Wednesday. He also said the shooter was dead, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The motive for the attack was unclear.St. Francis Health System locked down its campus Wednesday afternoon because of the situation at the Natalie Medical Building. The order of nuns that staffed numerous residential schools and 10 hospitals in British Columbia over more than 160 years is handing over ownership of its archives to the Royal B.C. Museum. The museum and Sisters of Saint Ann announced in a joint statement Wednesday that the transfer will be expedited and allow for the records to be digitized. Ford's chief executive says the global auto industry is headed for a huge price war in the coming years as electric vehicle costs drop and companies sell EVs priced around $25,000. CEO Jim Farley told the Bernstein Strategic Decisions Conference on Wednesday that the $25,000 electric vehicle will democratize EVs. Currently it costs way more to build an EV than one with a gas engine. But Farley said big cost reductions are coming with new battery chemistries that use fewer precious metals such as nickel and cobalt. Plus, he said EVs will take less time and labor to build, saving more money. Fo
