Punjab and Haryana High Court rejects bail plea of Bikram Singh Majithia in assets case

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has dismissed a bail application filed by senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader and former state minister Bikram Singh Majithia in a case alleging assets disproportionate to his known income. The ruling upholds an earlier decision by a Mohali court, which had also declined to grant him relief. Majithia has been in judicial custody since June 25, when the Punjab Vigilance Bureau arrested him in connection with an alleged money laundering matter linked to proceeds from drug trafficking. He is currently lodged at the New Nabha Jail in Patiala. The allegations form pa

The BC Conservative Party says John Rustad has been removed as leader of the provincial Opposition. The announcement comes after 20 members of Rustad's caucus said they had lost confidence in him and wanted him out. Rustad refused to resign and cited the party's constitution, which says a leader can only be removed by resignation, death, incapacitation or a leadership review. The party says its board of directors has decided Rustad is ``professionally incapacitated'' and unable to continue as leader of the party. The B.C. Private firm to restart deep-sea search for missing MH370 airliner

Malaysia’s transport ministry says a renewed effort to locate Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 is set to begin this month, marking the first large-scale search for the aircraft in several years. Texas-based marine robotics company Ocean Infinity has been contracted to carry out the operation under a no-find, no-fee arrangement with the Malaysian government. The firm led a similar mission in 2018 but ended its work without discoveries. This year’s search was paused in April because of rough weather in the Indian Ocean, where investigators believe the Boeing 777 went down. The ministry says Ocea

Fog warning extended for Metro Vancouver and inland Vancouver Island

Environment Canada has extended a fog warning for parts of Metro Vancouver and inland areas of Vancouver Island, citing continued near-zero visibility conditions expected to persist into Wednesday. The weather agency says dense fog remains trapped over the region due to a ridge of high pressure that is holding moist air close to the surface. The warning covers much of Metro Vancouver, excluding the North Shore, as well as inland sections of Vancouver Island, including Port Alberni. The prolonged fog has already affected transportation across the Lower Mainland. Vancouver International Airport

Alberta Court of Appeal Overturns Calgary Man’s Double Murder Conviction

The Alberta Court of Appeal has overturned the conviction of a Calgary man previously sentenced to life in prison for the 2020 killings of two men in northwest Calgary. Gerald Benn was initially found guilty of two counts of second-degree murder three years after the fatal shooting. At trial, the judge cited surveillance footage and DNA found on plastic bags at the scene as key evidence. In its ruling, the Court of Appeal concluded that the evidence presented at trial was insufficient to conclusively prove Benn was the shooter. The decision means Benn’s conviction has been quashed, though th

The future of Greenland is set to be discussed at a high level meeting in Davos after U.S. President Donald Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte held a phone conversation earlier this week, according to public statements released by both sides. Trump said he raised concerns about Greenland’s strategic importance during the call, telling Rutte that the Arctic territory plays a critical role in both U.S. national security and broader global stability.
