We often hear people lament the lack of diverse and meaningful topics in Punjabi cinema. For years, filmmakers have been caught in a loop, either focusing on light-hearted comedies or weaving melodramatic love stories, often sprinkled with a predictable love triangle. However, 2025 is shaping up to be very different. Punjabi cinema seems to be turning a new leaf, shifting its focus toward the rich and untold stories of Sikh history.

Last year, we saw notable films like Mastaaney by Tarsem Jassar and Bibi Rajni by Amar Hundal, both of which explored forgotten chapters of our past. These films didn’t just captivate audiences with their storytelling, but they also made a strong impact at the box office. This success has inspired the Punjabi film industry to continue exploring Sikh history in the coming year.

From Gippy Grewal’s Akaal to Tarsem Jassar’s Guru Nanak Jahaz, Sippy Gill’s portrayal of the Gadari Yodha, and an upcoming untitled project on Hari Singh Nalwa, Punjabi cinema is now diving deep into the rich and heroic legacy of Sikh history.

Whatever the reasons behind this shift, it is certainly a step in the right direction. The significance of films that remind us of our heritage, reconnect us with our forgotten past, and educate us about the true meaning of Sikh history cannot be overstated.

If cinema can bring these stories to life, unveiling the heroic deeds and untold struggles of our ancestors, it is not just entertaining—it's an essential cultural and historical service. This trend deserves all the appreciation, and we can only hope it continues to inspire and educate in the years to come.
