A 17-year old man was arrested after a stabbing outside a Surrey High School.

Background: On November 22, 2022, at approximately 12:08 p.m., the Surrey RCMP responded to a report of a stabbing outside of Tamanawis Secondary School, located in the 12600-block of 66 Avenue, Surrey. Officers arrived within minutes and located an 18-year old man suffering life-threatening injuries. Despite the best efforts of responding officers, the victim sadly succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter. As a result of the quick action of the Surrey RCMP, a 17-year old who was identified as a suspect by witnesses, was located and taken into custody. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) took conduct of the investigation and continue to work closely in partnership with the Surrey RCMP, the RCMP Forensic Identification Service and the BC Coroners Service.

Investigators are identifying the victim, 18-year old Mehakpreet Sethi of Surrey, in an effort to advance their investigation.

At this time, it is believed that the suspect and the victim were known to each other and that this was an isolated incident, not believed to be associated to the Lower Mainland gang conflict.

"We know there were many students in the area around the time this tragedy took place," says Sgt. Timothy Pierotti of IHIT. "If you or one of your loved ones has information that could help shed light on why this young man was killed, please contact IHIT immediately."

Alberta surpasses 300 measles cases as doctors warn of exponential increases

More than 300 people in Alberta have fallen ill from measles since March and a group of doctors are warning the virus could grow exponentially in the coming weeks. The Alberta government is reporting 16 new measles cases to bring the province's total count to 313. The rising number has prompted the association representing Alberta doctors to warn of an outbreak that could quickly reach the thousands. Dr. James Talbot, Alberta's former chief medical officer of health, says cases are likely much higher than reported and that for every 1,000 cases, one to three people will likely die.
