A man who allegedly forced his way into a home and took a person hostage was shot and killed by Vancouver police Monday night, according to authorities. Vancouver Police Department said officers responded to reports of a violent home invasion in the 3600-block of Commercial Street at approximately 9 p.m. Upon arrival, officers found a suspect inside the residence who had allegedly entered the home by force and was holding another person hostage. Elections Alberta has launched what it describes as one of the largest referendum staffing campaigns ever undertaken in Canada as the province prepares for a provincewide vote scheduled for October 19. The agency says it needs approximately 60,000 workers to administer and count ballots for 10 referendum questions that will be put to Alberta voters. Under provincial rules, ballot counting must be completed within 48 hours of polls closing.
