British Prime Minister Keir Starmer faced renewed pressure within the Labour Party on Tuesday after junior housing minister Miatta Fahnbulleh resigned from government following the party’s recent local election losses.
Fahnbulleh, who served as a minister in the housing, communities and local government department, said the government had failed to deliver the pace of change voters expected after Labour’s election victory.
In a resignation statement, Fahnbulleh said the government had not governed “with the vision, pace and mandate for change” it had been given by voters. She also said Labour had not acted “clear about our values and strong in our convictions.”
According to British media reports, Fahnbulleh is the first member of Starmer’s government to step down publicly while calling on the prime minister to outline a timetable for his departure.
The resignation follows Labour setbacks in local elections, increasing scrutiny of Starmer’s leadership and the government’s policy direction.
Public resignations from governing party ministers can intensify political pressure on party leadership and influence internal debates over policy and election strategy.
Starmer is expected to face continued questions from Labour MPs and party members about the government’s direction following the local election results.
