Trade and Defence Cooperation to Be Discussed at Canada-EU Summit

Canada and the European Union are expected to discuss launching a new partnership on trade and defence at a summit in Montreal next week. The talks could also include the possibility of Canada becoming an associate member of the 27-member European Union in the future.

The Canada-EU summit will take place on October 29 and 30. Prime Minister Mark Carney and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen are expected to discuss ways to reduce their economic dependence on the United States.

Both sides are also discussing a potential instant payment system to enable low-cost cross-border transactions.

Meanwhile, the European Union is reportedly preparing to formally invite Prime Minister Mark Carney to attend the European Political Community meeting scheduled to take place in Dublin next month.
