Tariffs on Canada and Mexico to Be Imposed Tomorrow

BY Connect Newsroom, Jan 31, 2025 7:26 PM - REPORT AN ERROR

Tariffs on Canada and Mexico are set to be imposed tomorrow. The White House has dismissed reports suggesting that the tariffs would be postponed until March 1. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, in response to reporters' questions, confirmed that these reports are incorrect. She stated that President Trump will implement a 25 percent tariff on Mexico and Canada, along with an additional 10 percent tariff on China starting tomorrow.

It is worth noting that Reuters had previously reported, citing sources, that the tariffs on Canada and Mexico might be delayed for at least a month. However, President Trump reiterated yesterday that the tariffs would be imposed on Canada and Mexico on Saturday.

The President cited illegal migration into the U.S., fentanyl smuggling, and trade deficits as the reasons behind the decision. He also mentioned that the tariffs may or may not increase over time.

In 2023, Canada exported goods worth $592.7 billion to the United States, accounting for more than 77 percent of Canada’s total exports that year.
