Several businesses on Vancouver's west side have been severely damaged in an overnight fire.

Flames broke out at about 2 a.m. in an older building (on Cambie Street, just north of 25th Avenue) and quickly swept through as many as five shops, including a cafe, dry cleaner and possibly a pharmacy and pet-boarding facility.

Firefighters rescued several cats from the pet business and worked past dawn to keep the flames from jumping concrete walls protecting a newer building to the north and several smaller shops on the south side.

No one has been hurt, a cause of the blaze is under investigation, and Vancouver Fire and Rescue says that section of usually busy Cambie Street will be closed for much of the day because of the extent of the damage.

Abbotsford police have arrested a 32-year-old man in connection with an alleged knifepoint carjacking in the 2800 block of Livingstone Avenue. According to the Abbotsford Police Department, the incident occurred at about 10 p.m. Tuesday when a woman was allegedly threatened with a knife and her vehicle was stolen. 33-year-old man charged after alleged armed carjacking during Red Deer test drive

A 33-year-old man is facing multiple criminal charges after an alleged armed carjacking during a vehicle test drive at a Red Deer dealership, according to the RCMP. Police said the incident occurred at about 11:26 a.m. Tuesday. RCMP allege the suspect produced a firearm as the test drive concluded and forced a dealership employee out of the vehicle before driving away.
