Indian-origin Ruby Dhalla, a former MP, has received official approval from the Liberal Party to run for its leadership and potentially become Canada’s next Prime Minister. Dhalla confirmed receiving a letter today approving her candidacy.

A three-time MP, Dhalla was first elected to the House of Commons in 2004 from Brampton-Springdale and re-elected in 2006 and 2008. She lost her seat in 2011 and chose not to contest in 2015. In 2004, she became the first Indian-origin woman in Canadian Parliament, alongside Conservative Nina Grewal.

Dhalla faces tough competition from heavyweights like Mark Carney, who has the backing of 52 Liberal MPs, and Chrystia Freeland, supported by 26 MPs so far.
