The Surrey Police Service says it will deploy officers and coordinate with multiple regional units to manage safety and traffic during the Surrey Khalsa Day Vaisakhi Parade scheduled for April 18.
According to a Surrey Police Service news release, the annual event draws tens of thousands of attendees and is among the largest Vaisakhi celebrations globally. Police said a public safety plan has been developed in coordination with the City of Surrey and event organizers, incorporating provincial guidance for large gatherings.
Officers from several agencies are expected to assist, including the Delta, New Westminster and Abbotsford police departments, along with Metro Vancouver Transit Police and integrated regional units such as the Lower Mainland District Integrated Emergency Response Team and Police Dog Service.
Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton said in the release that attendees are encouraged to plan ahead due to the size of the crowd. Police noted that in previous years, officers have responded to reports of missing children and elderly during the celebrations, often due to crowd separation.
Authorities are advising families to establish meeting points and supervision plans in advance. Police say officers will be present throughout the event to assist with public safety and crowd management.
