Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says it will take months of a continued and determined effort to avoid a COVID-19 worse-case scenario.

Trudeau is commenting on models released this morning forecasting how the continued spread of the pandemic will pan out based on how aggressively Canadians follow physical distancing protocols.

He says Canada is at a crossroad and the outcome will depend on how people behave, given there could be ongoing waves of the coronavirus.

He says this means physical distancing is and will be Canada's new reality until a vaccine is found.

Few Canadians are familiar with possible NDP leadership contenders: poll

A new poll suggests most Canadians are unfamiliar with nine possible NDP leadership contenders. A majority of respondents to the Research Co. poll said they "don't know who the person is" when asked about possible candidates like current NDP MPs Leah Gazan, Gord Johns, Jenny Kwan and Heather McPherson. The same goes for other high-profile New Democrats like former House leader Ruth Ellen Brosseau, former Vancouver mayor Kennedy Stewart and filmmaker Avi Lewis. Brosseau got the most positive response in the poll, with 18 per cent of respondents saying they have a favourable view of her, while K

IIO seeks witnesses to arrest and death of Burnaby, B.C., man

The Independent Investigations Office of BC says it is looking for witnesses to the arrest and death of a man in Burnaby, B.C., last week. It says in a news release that Burnaby RCMP officers reported they were called to the 7000 block of Hillview Street shortly after 4:30 p.m. last Friday. The IIO says callers reported concerns about a man "creating a disturbance and possibly suffering a mental health issue." The IIO says police found the man outside his home but as officers went to take him into custody, the man went into medical distress. It says officers provided medical aid and he was tak

Emergency doctor challenges Alberta premier to come on shift and see patients waiting in hallways

The head of emergency medicine for Alberta's doctors association is challenging Premier Danielle Smith -- shadow him on a shift and come see the frustration of patients who are jammed for hours in hallways. Dr. Warren Thirsk says Smith should come to see the moral injury that doctors face, looking into the eyes of those who need help but have to wait a long time to get it. Thirsk's comments come in wake of a new survey measuring patients' experiences in the health-care system released late last week by the Alberta Medical Association. Thirsk says he's seeing a trend of increasing

5 Israeli soldiers killed overnight in northern Gaza, military says

Five Israeli soldiers were killed overnight in northern Gaza, the Israeli military said Tuesday. The military said two other soldiers were seriously wounded. Israeli media said the infantry soldiers were on patrol when explosive devices were detonated against them. Media said militants also opened fire on the reinforcements sent to evacuate the dead and wounded. The deaths came roughly two weeks after Israel reported once of its deadliest days in months in Gaza, when seven soldiers were killed when a Palestinian attacker attached a bomb to their armored vehicle.
