Pakistan's former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has been re-elected as party president after six years. Only last year he was acquitted in all corruption cases. Nawaz alleged that various forces tried to create a rift in his relationship with his brother and party supporters but Shahbaz Sharif remained loyal.
It is to be noted that Shahbaz Sharif had recently resigned as the party president and said to hand over the reins to his elder brother Nawaz Sharif, who was unanimously elected as the party president on Tuesday. With their direct entry into politics, the political environment is expected to change.
Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif admitted that Pakistan had violated the 1999 Lahore Declaration Agreement with India, which he and then Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had signed. He indirectly referred to General Pervez Musharraf's initiation of the Kargil war and said, 'It was our fault.'
