BC Highway Patrol is reminding drivers across the province to equip their vehicles with proper winter tires after a luxury sports car was impounded for speeding and failing to meet seasonal driving requirements.
On October 13, 2025, a Highway Patrol motorcycle officer on Highway 99 near Porteau Cove clocked a northbound Lamborghini Huracán travelling at 165 kilometres per hour in an 80 zone. The 34-year-old North Vancouver driver was stopped and received multiple fines under the Motor Vehicle Act, including for excessive speed, failing to display a front licence plate, and not meeting winter tire requirements.
“Excessive speed is dangerous any time, but in winter conditions, roadways can get unexpectedly icy even when the air temperature is above zero,” said Corporal Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol. “You are legally required to have winter tires, which have better tread and compounds that grip the road even in cold temperatures.”
The driver faces more than $700 in fines, a seven-day vehicle impound, towing fees, and higher insurance costs that could total over $2,500.
Between October 1 and March 31, winter tires are required on most BC highways. These tires must have at least 3.5 millimetres of tread and display the “M+S” (mud and snow) or three-peaked mountain snowflake symbol. Studded tires are permitted from October 1 to April 30, provided studs do not extend more than two millimetres.
Highway Patrol officers say drivers may be turned away from mountain routes or highways if their vehicles are not properly equipped for winter conditions.
