Two people charged in connection with the discovery of a newborn's body outside Halifax appeared by video conference in Nova Scotia provincial court on Monday.
Sukhpreet Singh, 23, and his wife, Ramandeep Kaur, 26, remain in custody and are charged with concealing the body of a child, indignity to human remains and obstructing a police investigation. The case was adjourned until July 24 as investigators await the results of an autopsy report.
According to police, the investigation began on May 22 when a 23-year-old woman, described as a relative of Singh, arrived at a hospital in serious condition after recently giving birth. Authorities said the newborn was not with her.
Police later recovered the body of a newborn on May 24 in a wooded area outside Halifax. The child's mother died in hospital on May 27 while receiving treatment.
Investigators have said additional charges could be laid once the autopsy findings are complete. Police have not released the cause of the newborn's death, and the investigation remains ongoing.
