Former Minister Sean Fraser Returns to Federal Politics, Will Run in Central Nova

BY Connect Newsroom, Mar 25, 2025 7:10 PM - REPORT AN ERROR

Fraser's decision comes nearly three months after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced last year that he would not seek re-election, citing a desire to spend more time with his family.

Former Canadian immigration and housing minister Sean Fraser has made his return to federal politics, confirming on Tuesday that he will run for office in his Central Nova riding in Nova Scotia.

Fraser's decision comes nearly three months after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced last year that he would not seek re-election, citing a desire to spend more time with his family. In the interim, the party had fielded another candidate for Central Nova. However, Sean Fraser's return was supported by party leader Mark Carney, who described it as an extraordinary case, emphasizing that Canada needs leaders like Fraser.

It is also worth noting that Sean Fraser is at least the fifth Liberal MP who had initially planned to resign amid the party's declining poll numbers but has now reversed that decision following Carney's leadership.
