The Election Commission has issued a strong warning on the statement made by Charanjit Singh Channi, the Congress candidate from the Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat of Punjab, about the army. The Election Commission said that such statements are a violation of the code of conduct and should be avoided. During a public meeting on May 5, Channi had remarked that the terrorist attack on an Air Force convoy on May 4 was an election stunt by the BJP.
The Commission said that it had issued a notice to Channi to give an explanation to the District Election Officer and DC of Jalandhar but the Commission was not satisfied with their reply. Channi has been warned not to make such unverified statements again.
Along with this, the commission advised all the parties and candidates to avoid comments related to one's personal life and the criticism of the opposition parties should be limited to the policies, programs and past record of the party.
