Premier David Eby has inducted two MLAs from Surrey into the NDP government’s cabinet. Surrey-Guildford MLA Gary Begg has been appointed Minister of Public Safety, a portfolio previously held by Mike Farnworth in the previous government.
Gary Begg is the same MLA who played a key role in helping the NDP form a government with an absolute majority.
In fact, in the recount of votes in the Surrey-Guildford riding, the victory of Conservative candidate Honvir Singh was overturned, and the seat went to Gary Begg by a margin of just 22 votes.
At the same time, the second minister from Surrey, Surrey-Fleetwood MLA Jagroop Brar, has been appointed to the Ministry of Mining and Critical Minerals. Meanwhile, Mike Farnworth, who played a role in the Surrey policing transformation, will now oversee the Ministry of Transportation and Transit. It is worth noting that Surrey has 4 NDP and 6 Conservative MLAs.
