Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh will remain lodged in Dibrugarh Central Jail in Assam even after the expiry of his detention under the National Security Act, following an interim order by the High Court.
According to court proceedings, the Punjab and Haryana High Court directed that Singh not be transferred to Punjab and that hearings in the cases registered against him will continue to be conducted within the Assam jail premises. The interim order came in response to a petition filed by the Punjab government.
Singh’s legal counsel argued before the court that he does not pose any threat in Punjab and should be allowed to return. The court did not accept this submission and maintained that he remain in custody in Assam.
The preventive detention period under the National Security Act is set to expire on April 22. The Punjab government has stated it will not seek an extension of the detention under the Act. Instead, authorities will proceed with hearings in approximately a dozen criminal cases registered against Singh.
The case now shifts from preventive detention to judicial proceedings, with multiple charges expected to be heard in the coming weeks under court supervision.
