Canada’s Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne is set to meet India’s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in Toronto today for an important bilateral meeting. The two ministers will first hold a private meeting, followed by a joint press conference.
The meeting is being viewed as an important step toward advancing trade and economic discussions between Canada and India. It also comes at a significant time, as both countries have made major efforts over the past year to improve and strengthen their bilateral relations.
According to Canada’s Department of Finance, the two countries share strong historic ties. Canadian investment in India had exceeded $110 billion as of 2024, highlighting the importance of the economic relationship between the two nations.
The two finance ministers are also scheduled to attend a special event hosted by the Canadian Club Toronto.
Sitharaman is currently on an official visit to Canada and the United States from Tuesday until September 2. Toronto is the first stop of her tour, with her meeting with Champagne expected to focus on strengthening economic cooperation and taking bilateral trade discussions forward.
