Calgary to host 2024 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games

Calgary has been selected to host the 2024 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games, Mayor Jyoti Gondek said in a release.

It was in 2019 that Calgary previously hosted the Special Olympics Alberta Winter Provincial Games and the 1988 Winter Olympic Games.

Mayor Jyoti Gondek (joh-TEE' GONE-dek) says Calgarians will volunteer in great numbers to ensure the event delivers the experience of a lifetime for the athletes and their families.

With 1,300 participants coming to the city, Tourism Calgary is predicting the event will inject more than nine-million dollars into the local economy.

Special Olympics Canada CEO Sharon Bollenbach says they know Calgary will go above and beyond to deliver an exceptional games experience.

A tornado that touched down in central Alberta on Saturday damaged homes, knocked down trees and blocked roads in parts of Clearwater County, including the Town of Rocky Mountain House. A wildfire has destroyed much of the seasonal camp at Whitewater Lake First Nation, located about 250 kilometres north of Thunder Bay, marking the second First Nation community in Ontario to suffer significant wildfire damage in less than a week. Two Stony Plain residents killed in Parkland County collision west of Edmonton

Two Stony Plain residents were killed and another person was seriously injured following a two-vehicle collision in Parkland County, west of Edmonton, on Thursday. According to the RCMP, the collision occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 627 and Highway 60, involving a Jeep and a pickup truck. Police confirmed that a 69-year-old man and a 64-year-old woman, both from Stony Plain and travelling in the Jeep, were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the pickup truck, who was the vehicle's sole occupant, was taken to hospital with serious injuries, RCMP said.
