Calgary to host 2024 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games

Calgary has been selected to host the 2024 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games, Mayor Jyoti Gondek said in a release.

It was in 2019 that Calgary previously hosted the Special Olympics Alberta Winter Provincial Games and the 1988 Winter Olympic Games.

Mayor Jyoti Gondek (joh-TEE' GONE-dek) says Calgarians will volunteer in great numbers to ensure the event delivers the experience of a lifetime for the athletes and their families.

With 1,300 participants coming to the city, Tourism Calgary is predicting the event will inject more than nine-million dollars into the local economy.

Special Olympics Canada CEO Sharon Bollenbach says they know Calgary will go above and beyond to deliver an exceptional games experience.

The Alberta government is sending additional firefighters and support crews to British Columbia today to help battle wildfires across the province. Calgary police say the man who shot at officers and struck one officer twice during a traffic stop yesterday had ties to organized crime. Police have not identified the suspect, who was later found dead in the Bow River from what they describe as a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators have not provided details about the type of organized crime group he was allegedly connected to. The officer was shot twice and is expected to make a full recovery.
