Bhai Amritpal Singh, the Head of the Waris Punjab De outfit and a pro-Khalistani leader, was arrested. Nine of his accomplices have also been arrested from different places. His arrest has been made in connection with three separate cases registered in connection with the Ajnala incident that took place in the past.

Protests were also held at several places in connection with these arrests. Section 144 has been imposed in many districts of Punjab. There were also reports that the police may also invoke the National Security Act against Bhai Amritpal Singh. An alert has been issued to deal with any kind of situation in Punjab.

It is worth mentioning that after the Ajnala incident, there was a lot of pressure over the arrest of Bhai Amritpal Singh. The government was being severely attacked by the opposition over the issue.

Bhai Amritpal Singh was scheduled to attend the function at Rampura Phul in Bathinda today. Yesterday, some Hindu organisations had threatened to stage a protest if Bhai Amritpal Singh was not stopped from coming to Bathinda. Today, when Bhai Amritpal Singh's convoy left for Bathinda, the police had set up barricades on the way. Thus, some of his associates were arrested and later Bhai Amritpal Singh was taken into custody. Police are yet to officially confirm the arrest of Bhai Amritpal Singh and his father said he had no information about the arrest. There are reports of his father also being placed under house arrest by the Punjab Police. More details are still awaited.

Congress leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira has appealed to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann not to invoke UAPA or NSA against Bhai Amritpal Singh as he is not involved in any terrorist activities. Charges can only be levelled against him in connection with the Ajnala incident.

Poilievre proposes temporary federal gas tax holiday, cites cost relief for drivers

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is calling on the federal government to suspend gas taxes for the remainder of the year, saying the measure would provide immediate cost relief as fuel prices rise. In a press release issued Thursday, Poilievre said eliminating federal fuel taxes could save a family of four about $1,200 over the rest of 2026. He argued the policy would ease financial pressure on households facing higher transportation and food costs. “Canadians deserve affordable fuel and food,” Poilievre said in the release, adding that the proposal would allow seniors, families and wo
