The BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia of an incident in Kitimat which resulted in a man being taken to hospital with serious injuries.

On January 13, 2023, at approximately 5:10 a.m., Kitimat RCMP responded to a call of a break and enter at a local business.

When officers attended the area, a possible suspect was observed carrying a large bag. When officers attempted to engage with the man, he allegedly dropped the bag and attempted to flee on foot. As he did it is reported that he fell to the ground and was injured.

The man was transported to hospital by Emergency Health Services where it was determined that he had suffered non-life threatening injuries. No other individuals or police officers required medical treatment.

IIO BC is investigating to determine whether police actions or inactions are linked to the man’s injuries. As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police.

The Kitimat RCMP continues to investigate the reported break and enter.
