Alberta voters have overwhelmingly rejected a proposal to separate from Canada in a referendum, with preliminary results indicating that approximately 76 per cent voted to remain in the country, while only 24 per cent supported initiating the separation process.
Following the historic vote, Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith thanked Albertans, describing the result as a victory for a united and strong Canada.
Carney said the strong support for remaining in Canada sent a clear message that Albertans had chosen unity, cooperation and standing together as a country.
He added that Canadians now have a significant opportunity to protect what they have built together and make Canada, which he described as one of the best countries in the world, an even better place for every citizen.
Days before the referendum, Carney visited Alberta and participated in the “Forever Canadian” rallies in Calgary and Edmonton, encouraging residents to vote in favour of remaining part of Canada.
