Alberta UCP confirms 3 candidates in leadership race as clock ticks down on deadline

Alberta's United Conservative Party has confirmed three candidates for its leadership race as the clock ticks down on the deadline for applications.

Travis Toews, Danielle Smith and Brian Jean have been confirmed as candidates ahead of today's 5 p.m. deadline.

Toews stepped down as finance minister in late May in order to run while Jean is currently the UCP legislature member for Fort McMurray-Lac la Biche, and Smith is the former leader of Alberta's Wildrose party.

Rajan Sawhney, Rebecca Schulz, Todd Loewen and Leela Aheer say they have submitted the required number of signatures and are waiting to be confirmed as candidates.

Two other candidates _ one-time legislature member Raj Sherman and former investment banker Jon Horsman _ are still scrambling to get the required minimum 1,000 signatures from supporters.

Sentencing arguments begin today for 62-year-old Richard Mantha, who was convicted of sexually assaulting three vulnerable women and drugging one of them. A 27-year-old man has died after getting into distress while swimming near Goldstream Falls in Goldstream Provincial Park on Monday evening. West Shore RCMP said officers responded to the incident at around 7:35 p.m. on August 17. The man reportedly went underwater while swimming near the waterfall and did not resurface. Elections Alberta has confirmed that a by-election in the Calgary-Shaw provincial constituency will be held Sept. 14. The official writ for the election has now been issued. Police in Edmonton are investigating a weekend shooting that claimed the life of a 16-year-old girl. Officers were called to an area in northeast Edmonton on Sunday morning, where they found the teenager suffering from serious injuries. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene.
