Alberta’s Opposition NDP is accusing Premier Danielle Smith’s United Conservative government of weakening democratic processes following a proposal to review and redraw electoral boundaries.
The criticism comes after the government introduced a motion to create a new committee that would examine constituency boundaries and consider changes to representation in the legislature. According to statements made during debate in the legislature on Tuesday, the proposal could also lead to an increase in the number of seats to address representation concerns in rural areas.
NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi told the legislature the move is unprecedented in Canadian history and described it as unfair. He alleged the changes could reduce the influence of voters in Calgary and Edmonton while benefiting rural constituencies where the UCP holds support.
Government House Leader Jason Nixon rejected those claims, saying the opposition is overreacting. He said the proposal is aimed at ensuring representation keeps pace with Alberta’s growing population and that rural regions are not underrepresented.
The NDP has launched a public campaign opposing the plan. Connect Newsroom contacted the United Conservative Party for additional details on the committee’s mandate and timeline. No response was received by publication time.
