Albertans will take part in a province-wide referendum on Oct. 19 that will ask voters to weigh in on Alberta’s future relationship with Canada, Premier Danielle Smith announced Thursday evening during a televised address.
Smith said the provincial government plans to include a new “blended question” on the ballot aimed at reflecting the views of both groups advocating for Alberta to remain within Canada and those supporting greater sovereignty or separation. PBO says Canadian governments to spend $1 billion to host World Cup
The federal budget watchdog says Canada will spend just over $1 billion to host the World Cup this summer.
That includes money from all levels of government, with the federal government contributing $473 million.
The total averages to $82 million per game for the 13 games that will be played in Toronto and Vancouver.
The parliamentary budget officer says that’s about in line with what previous host countries spent.

Canada’s inflation rate rises to 2.8 per cent in April as gasoline prices climb
Canada’s annual inflation rate rose to 2.8 per cent in April, driven largely by higher gasoline prices, according to new data released by Statistics Canada. The increase marks the first time in nearly two years that the consumer price index (CPI) has reached that level.
Statistics Canada reported gasoline prices were up 28.6 per cent compared with the same month last year. Energy costs had also been a major factor in March, when the annual inflation rate reached 2.4 per cent.

Carney, Smith expected to unveil Alberta industrial carbon pricing deal tied to pipeline plan
Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith are expected to announce an agreement Friday on the future of industrial carbon pricing in Alberta, a move both governments have linked to plans for a new bitumen export pipeline to Canada’s West Coast.

Honda Motor Co. has indefinitely suspended plans for its proposed $15-billion electric vehicle project in Alliston, Ontario, a move that raises new questions about the pace of Canada’s EV manufacturing expansion.

CBSA launches hundreds of immigration investigations linked to extortion networks across Canada
The Canada Border Services Agency says it has launched hundreds of immigration investigations tied to alleged extortion networks operating across Canada, with dozens of foreign nationals already deported as part of the enforcement effort.
According to information shared during a public safety roundtable in British Columbia, the agency had opened 446 immigration investigations nationwide as of May 7 involving foreign nationals suspected of participating in or being connected to extortion-related activities.

Motorcyclist seriously injured in Delta crash that left bike suspended from traffic light
A motorcyclist was taken to hospital with serious injuries after a crash in Delta on Saturday that left the motorcycle hanging from a traffic light, according to Delta police.
Delta Police said officers responded to the 7100 block of Scott Road shortly before 3 p.m. following reports of a collision involving a motorcycle and another vehicle.

Canada’s unemployment rate rises to 6.9% in April as full-time job losses mount
Canada’s unemployment rate increased to 6.9 per cent in April, according to new data released Friday by Statistics Canada. The figure marks the country’s highest unemployment rate in the past six months.
Statistics Canada reported a net loss of 17,700 jobs during the month. Full-time employment saw the sharpest decline, with 46,700 positions lost, while part-time employment increased by 29,000 jobs.
The agency said Canada has lost a total of 112,000 jobs during the first four months of 2026. Youth unemployment continued to outpace the national average, rising to 14.3 per cent in April.
