Punjab’s nightingale Gurmeet Bawa no more/ Facebook
Renowned folk singer Gurmeet Bawa passed away at a private hospital on Sunday following a prolonged illness, sending her fans and the music industry into mourning.
The 77-year old singer was popularly known as ‘mallika of hek’ and was among the few surviving legendary folk artistes.
She had performed in 35 countries.
Her longest ‘hek’ was recorded during a performance at Georgia.
People fondly remember her for her renditions with folk instruments like chimta, tumbi and dholki.
She was also the first female singer to perform on Doordarshan.
People from music and art industries expressed shock at her demise.
CM Charanjit Singh Channi expressed grief over her demise. Deputy CM Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and Minister for Higher Education and Languages Pargat Singh also expressed sorrow over her demise.
