Egypt recorded its first-ever FIFA World Cup victory with a 3–1 comeback win over New Zealand on Sunday, moving to the top of Group G at BC Place in Vancouver.
A crowd of 52,497 attended the match, marking the third consecutive sellout at the Vancouver stadium during the tournament.
New Zealand took an early lead in the first half when Finn Surman found the back of the net to put his side ahead 1–0. Egypt responded after the break with goals from Mostafa Ziko, Mohamed Salah and Trézéguet to complete the comeback and secure the historic win.
According to FIFA match results, the victory places Egypt atop Group G heading into its next match against Iran on Friday in Seattle.
The next FIFA World Cup match in Vancouver is scheduled for Wednesday, when Canada and Switzerland will meet in a Group B showdown with first place in the group at stake.
