Prime Minister Boris Johnson says British and French officials are working "to unblock the flow of trade as fast as possible" after France barred U.K. trucks over concerns about a new variant of the coronavirus. There are kilometres-long lineups of trucks waiting to get out of Britain near the Port of Dover. France has banned trucks from entering for 48 hours while a new strain of COVID-19 that is spreading in southeast England is assessed.Dozens of countries have barred flights from the U.K. because of the new variant, which scientists believe is more easily transmitted. Electoral College confirms Biden's victory; Biden says current president should finally accept his own defeat

President-elect Joe Biden says his Electoral College victory of the same magnitude as President Donald Trump's in 2016 is a signal that the current president should finally accept his own defeat in this year's election. Biden noted during a speech Monday in Wilmington, Delaware, that Trump called his 2016 tally of 306 electoral votes a "landslide." Biden says if that constituted a clear victory then, he wanted to "respectfully suggest" that Trump now accept Biden's victory this year. Trump has refused to concede defeat in the presidential vote, making repeated and unfounded allegations of wid

Donald Trump's campaign joining a case before the Supreme Court, challenging election results in Pennsylvania and other states

US President Donald Trump's campaign is joining an improbable case before the Supreme Court, challenging election results in Pennsylvania and other states that he lost. Trump is apparently trying to look past the justices' rejection of a last-gasp bid to reverse Pennsylvania's certification of Democrat Joe Biden's victory. The suit by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, a Republican, demands the 62 total Electoral College votes in Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin be invalidated.

New data shows Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine is showing signs of producing lasting immunity. The American biotech firm says it will have as many as 125 million doses available by the end of March. Health Canada is expected to approve Moderna's candidate shortly, and Ottawa has signed an agreement with the drugmaker to buy at least 20 million doses. Currently only two million doses are supposed to arrive in the first three months of 2021, but the company says it should have 15 to 25 million doses available for non-U. S. deliveries before the end of March.

Frontline RCMP officers in the West Shore area are now equipped with body-worn cameras as part of a new initiative aimed at increasing transparency and accountability in policing. The detachment says the cameras will record officers’ interactions with the public in real time, helping gather evidence and document events more clearly. Officers have received training on the proper use of the technology, including how and when to activate the devices and how to securely store recorded footage. Prime Minister Carney celebrates Blue Jays’ World Series return after dramatic Game 7 win

Prime Minister Mark Carney says he is “super pumped” after the Toronto Blue Jays clinched their first American League pennant in more than three decades with a comeback victory over the Seattle Mariners. Speaking to reporters in Ottawa on Tuesday, Carney praised outfielder George Springer’s three-run home run that lifted the Jays to a 4–3 win in Game 7. The shot, which came despite Springer being hit on the knee earlier in the series, secured Toronto’s first trip to the World Series since 1993. Carney said the victory evoked memories of Joe Carter’s iconic walk-off home run that s

Vote counting resumes in municipal elections across Alberta

Vote counting in Alberta's municipal and school board elections has resumed. Few results were available after polls closed Monday night, as rule changes made by Premier Danielle Smith's government require votes be counted by hand rather than with machines. As of this morning, fewer than 25 per cent of polls for Edmonton's mayoral race have reported, with longtime councillor Andrew Knack leading over fellow councillor Tim Cartmell. In Calgary, unofficial results have former councillor Jeremy Farkas unseating incumbent mayor Jyoti Gondek, who has conceded. Jasper Mayor Richard Ire
