Expert: Chauvin never took knee off Floyd's neck

A use-of-force expert says Derek Chauvin had his knee on George Floyd's neck the entire time that he was handcuffed behind his back and lying facedown. Jody Stiger is a Los Angeles Police Department sergeant serving as a prosecution witness. He testified Wednesday that his review of video evidence found that Chauvin's knee was on Floyd's neck from the time officers put Floyd on the ground until paramedics arrived, about 9 1/2 minutes, by prosecutors' reckoning. Stiger also says bystanders didn't appear to be a threat to police. Chauvin's attorney has suggested officers were distracted by angr

Police chief: Kneeling on Floyd's neck violated policy

The Minneapolis police chief says now-fired Officer Derek Chauvin violated departmental policy in pinning his knee on George Floyd's neck and keeping him down after Floyd had stopped resisting and was in distress. Chief Medaria Arradondo took the stand on Day Six of Chauvin's trial in the death of the 46 year old Black man last May. Arradondo said continuing to kneel on Floyd's neck once he was handcuffed behind his back and lying on his stomach was"in no way, shape or form" part of department policy or training, "and it is certainly not part of our ethics or our values." Train hits truck that slid onto track near a tunnel in Taiwan, killing 51

A train has barrelled into an unmanned truck that rolled onto the track in Taiwan. The National Fire Service said at least 51 people were killed and dozens injured in the island's deadliest rail disaster. Many passengers were crushed, while some survivors were forced to climb out of windows and walk along the train's roof to safety. The government's disaster relief centre said the truck's emergency brake was not properly engaged and the vehicle slid down a hillside. A Railways Administration official said the train's lead car then crashed into the truck. The crash occurred Friday, the first d

Suspect in attack on Asian American woman in NYC is arrested

Police say a parolee who was convicted of killing his mother nearly two decades ago has been arrested on charges including felony assault as a hate crime for a brutal attack on an Asian American woman near New York City's Times Square. Police said Brandon Elliot is the man seen on video kicking and stomping the woman on Monday. It's not clear whether he has a lawyer who can speak on his behalf. The New York Times reports that victim's daughter has identified her as Vilma Kari, a 65 year old woman who immigrated from the Philippines. NYPD on Twitter: At today’s press conference @NYPDShea sha

Woman killed after shooting gun in Indonesia's police HQ

A woman entered Indonesia's National Police Headquarters and fired a gun at several officers before being shot dead by police, in what officials said was the latest militant attack in the world's most populous Muslim nation. There were no reports of injuries among the police. Authorities had earlier imposed a counterterrorism crackdown following a suicide bombing at a Roman Catholic cathedral during Palm Sunday Mass which wounded at least 20 people. Televised video showed an unidentified woman wearing a long black robe and a blue veil walking Wednesday toward the police chief's office buildin

Video shows vicious attack of Asian American woman in NYC

The New York City Police Department says an Asian American woman has been attacked by a man who repeatedly kicked her in front of witnesses who seemingly stood by. Police say the 65 year old woman was walking along 43rd street on Monday afternoon when a man came up to her and kicked her in the stomach, knocking her to the ground. Police say the man then stomped on the woman's face several times while shouting anti-Asian insults at her. Surveillance footage shows the man casually walking away after the assault while onlookers watched. The woman was hospitalized with serious injuries. The NYPD'

Ottawa announces one-year extension to anti-ISIL mission, but offers few details

Canada is staying in the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant for another year. Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan announced this afternoon that Canada will keep up to 850 troops in Iraq and the surrounding region until next March. The extension comes only one day before the mission, which began in October 2014, was set to end. It also coincides with growing concerns about Iran's influence in Iraq, with Tehran backing numerous Shia militia groups. Those groups, which have largely displaced ISIL as the main threat in Iraq, have stepped up attacks on Western forces in recent month

Trains crash in southern Egypt, killing at least 32

Authorities say two trains crashed in southern Egypt, killing at least 32 people and injuring 165 in the latest of a series of deadly crashes on the country's troubled railways. The railway authorities say someone apparently activated the emergency brakes on the passenger train, and it was rear-ended by another train, causing two cars to derail and flip on their side in the province of Sohag. The prime minister later said no conclusion has been reached on the cause. Video showed twisted piles of metal with passengers trapped inside, some bleeding and others unconscious. The injured were taken

Colorado shooting leaves 10 dead in latest mass tragedy, shooter ID'd as 21-year-old man

Police have identified a 21-year-old man as the suspect in the killing of 10 people at a Boulder, Colorado, supermarket. Authorities on Tuesday also identified nine victims after previously identifying a police officer who had been killed. Authorities say the victims were men and women between the ages of 20 and 65. The shooting Monday at the crowded supermarket sent terrorized shoppers and workers scrambling for safety and stunned a state and a nation that has grieved several mass killings. Boulder Police Chief Maris Herold said police engaged in a shootout with the suspect inside the super

Woman dead, several displaced after house fire in Mission

A woman has died and several people have been forced from their home following a house fire on Shaw Street in Mission earlier this week. Emergency crews were called to the rural property around 1:45 a.m. on November 6 after a neighbour reported flames coming from the home. When firefighters and RCMP officers arrived, the building was already fully engulfed. Once the fire was brought under control, investigators confirmed that an adult woman had been found dead inside the residence. A man was taken to hospital for smoke inhalation but has since been released. No other serious injuries were repo

B.C. sees slight job decline in October amid U.S. tariff uncertainty, says minister

British Columbia recorded a small drop in employment last month as global trade tensions and new U.S. tariffs added pressure to key sectors, according to the province’s jobs minister. Minister of Jobs and Economic Growth Ravi Kahlon said Friday that the October Labour Force Survey from Statistics Canada shows a decline of about 2,900 jobs in B.C., largely due to losses in construction and forestry. He linked those decreases to “unjustified” tariffs imposed by the United States, which he said have hurt workers and businesses across the province. Despite the monthly dip, Kahlon noted that

According to the Sûreté du Québec, 20 of the accused have already appeared in court on charges that include possession, distribution and access of child sexual abuse material. The investigation was conducted between November 3 and 7, with more than 150 officers participating in searches across multiple cities, including Montreal, Quebec City,
