Trudeau to speak to federal ministers on B.C. protests

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is in Senegal today, wrapping up a trip through Africa, but he has been kept apprised of growing protests and blockades by opponents of the Coastal GasLink natural gas pipeline across northern BC. Freight trains bound for the Port of Prince Rupert have been stalled for days by a blockade near New Hazelton, and Via Rail and CN both say blockades in BC, Ontario and Quebec are affecting the movement of thousands of passengers and tonnes of goods. Trudeau says while the federal government respects the right to peaceful protest, the rule of law must also be respected.

Cruise ship barred by 4 governments set to dock in Cambodia

The operators of a cruise ship that was barred from docking by four governments say it will finally land and disembark passengers in Cambodia. Thailand had said it would not allow the MS Westerdam to dock at a Thai port after it had already been turned away by the Philippines, Taiwan and Japan. The ship has been unwelcome because of fears that those aboard could spread COVID-19, the new viral disease that originated in China. Holland America Line says no cases of the disease have been confirmed among the more than 2,200 passengers and crew on board. The ship is due to arrive in Sihanoukville,

Hockey players' sexual assault trial hears from former world junior teammates

The sexual assault trial of five former members of Canada's world junior hockey team is hearing today from other players who were on the 2018 team. Taylor Raddysh, who now plays in the NHL for the Washington Capitals, was asked what he remembers about several days in June 2018 when many of the team's members were in London, Ont., for a handful of events marking their victory in that year's championship. Court heard part of a transcript of a statement Raddysh gave in July 2018, in which he recalled seeing a woman in bed under the covers in the room of his then-teammate Michael McLeod in the ear

Day of mourning in B.C. as Vancouver festival attack suspect to face court

It's a day of remembrance and mourning in British Columbia today for victims of the deadly attack at a Filipino festival, as the suspect in the killings faces court. A community spokesman says the official day of mourning for the 11 people who died after an SUV sped through a crowded street will be part of the healing process but "certainly not the end of it." RJ Aquino with Filipino BC, the group that organized the Lapu Lapu Day event last Saturday, says the government's designation of the day of mourning shows the significance of the tragedy in the history of the province and the city. Alberta's Smith says she doesn't see 'an appetite' for provincial pension plan

The idea of Alberta opting out of the Canada Pension Plan isn't going anywhere -- at least for now. Premier Danielle Smith says she won't be putting the creation of a provincial pension plan to a referendum any time soon. Smith says she doesn't think Albertans have ``an appetite'' to pull out of the national pension program, and says the issue is further clouded by lack of detail on how much the province would get if it left. In December, Canada's chief actuary published a report saying Alberta's perceived stake of the Canadian Pension Plan's overall assets was substantially over
