RCMP falsely reports child's death in vehicle crash in BC

The RCMP say they have mistakenly reported the death of a child in a crash near Kamloops, B.C. The Mounties issued a news release Monday saying a 47-year-old man and two children, ages eight and six, died following a crash on Highway 5A near Stump Lake on Sunday. In a correction issued Tuesday, Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says a five-year-old is still alive but remains in ``grave condition'' at a hospital in Vancouver. Patty Hajdu: COVID-19 is spreading, Canadians have to be prepared for that

Federal Health Minister Patty Hajdu says it's clear that COVID-19 is spreading around the world and Canadians have to be prepared for that. Currently there are 11 confirmed or presumptive cases of the virus reported in Canada, but most people have recovered and the rest are not seriously ill. She says her message to Canadians is to take the disease seriously and to be prepared for possible disruptions in their communities. Hajdu says health officials do have a plan in place for a pandemic.

Six people arrested at Port of Vancouver blockade

Vancouver police say they arrested six people who refused to abide by a court order that prohibits the main entrance to the city's port from being blocked. Protesters arrived outside the port Monday afternoon and police say they reminded them of the injunction and asked them to leave prior to the arrests today. The injunction was granted to the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority on Feb. 9. Several people were taken into custody by police when a similar blockade was removed nearly three weeks ago.

No new cases of a new coronavirus in BC, Dr. Bonnie Henry

B.C.'s provincial health officer says there are no new cases of a new coronavirus in the province since a seventh case was identified over the weekend. But she says all those who have been diagnosed with the flu-like respiratory illness are doing well and are recovering in isolation at home. Henry says the World Health Organization has not yet termed the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic but there is a good possibility that it will continue to spread. She says officials are ``starting to think more'' about how they would respond should a pandemic be declared.

Indigenous Services Minister Marc Miller says communication has been challenging, but he thinks government ministers are closer to getting a meeting with Wet'suwet'en hereditary chiefs in British Columbia. That's as more rail blockades are springing up in Quebec and Ontario. Miller says the government is still working to find an agreement on the chiefs' demands that the RCMP leave their territory. Exceptional' power outage in Spain and Portugal affects millions of people

A blackout has brought much of Spain and Portugal to a standstill, affecting millions of people. The Spanish power distributor calls it ``exceptional and extraordinary." It says restoring power fully could take six to 10 hours. The cause was not immediately clear Monday. Spain's prime minister said a ``strong oscillation'' in the European grid was behind the outage. Man dies after car jumps curb, crashes into seven vehicles in Surrey, B.C.

A man has died in a crash involving eight vehicles in Surrey, B.C., after he suffered what investigators believe to be a medical emergency while driving. Trial begins in former world junior hockey players' sexual assault case

The sexual assault trial of five former members of Canada's world junior hockey team has begun today in London, Ont. Michael McLeod, Carter Hart, Alex Formenton, Dillon Dube and Callan Foote have all pleaded not guilty to sexual assault.
