Man arrested after charging at officer with hatchet in New Westminster
On August 8th at approximately noon, the New Westminster Police Department received a call from a witness advising there was a man walking through the Brow of the Hill neighbourhood with a hatchet. A patrol officer quickly located the suspect and attempted to speak with him. However, the suspect raised the hatchet in a threatening manner and charged at the officer. The officer was able to avoid the suspect, who then fled the area. Two residences shot over night in Surrey
Surrey RCMP is seeking information following two shootings overnight and requesting anyone with CCTV or dash camera video from the areas to contact police. On August 9, 2022 just after midnight, Surrey RCMP received a report of shots heard and a vehicle speeding away in the 14800-block of 76A Avenue. Fire restriction in effect for part of southwestern Alberta due to hot, dry weather
A fire restriction is now in effect for a large part of southwestern Alberta as hot weather hits with no rain in the forecast.
The order for the Calgary forest area issued today by Alberta Forestry suspends all fire permits, requires all outdoor fires to be put out and prohibits wood campfires on public land _ particularly the backcountry.
Officials say extreme temperatures and dry conditions have persisted in the area with almost no precipitation.

Calgary's Municipal Building reopenes to the public
Calgary's Municipal Building reopened to the public yesterday.
The move came after a break-in where several fires were set.
Police say a man armed with a knife entered the building around 4 a-m last Tuesday and started lighting fires.
Although the building has reopened, several service counters inside are still closed.
The city is trying to assess the extent of the damage and to estimate repair costs and a timeline for completion.
“The Police investigation is still active, and we will not be commenting on the individual or the investigation at this point,” said the City of Calgary.

Large explosions rock Russian military air base in Crimea
Powerful explosions rocked a Russian air base in Crimea on Tuesday, and at least five people, including a child, were wounded, authorities said.
Russia's Defense Ministry said that munitions blew up at the Saki base, and it emphasized that the installation had not been shelled.
But Ukrainian social networks were abuzz with speculation that it was hit by Ukrainian-fired long-range missiles.
There was no immediate comment from Ukrainian authorities.
Videos posted on social networks showed sunbathers fleeing a nearby beach as huge clouds of smoke from the explosions rose over the horizon.

Alberta NDP requests auditor general to investigate bonuses to chief medical officer
The Alberta NDP is calling on the province's auditor general to investigate bonuses paid to the chief medical officer of health and other managers for work related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. Deena Hinshaw received a record-setting bonus payment of almost 228-thousand dollars last year in addition to her regular salary of more than 591-thousand dollars.
In a letter to Auditor General Doug Wylie on Monday, finance critic Shannon Phillips requested a performance audit of the bonus payment structures and processes related to the COVID-19 pandemic response.

One dead, one in critical condition after RCMP shooting in northern Alberta
One person is dead following a police shooting northeast of Edmonton.
RCMP say a second person was also shot and taken to hospital in critical condition.
Mounties say officers from the St. Paul detachment were looking on the Saddle Lake Cree Nation for two suspects in several ongoing investigations.
They say there was a confrontation between the suspects and police, and the shooting then happened in the nearby Smoky Lake area.
No officers were injured.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, the province's police watchdog agency, is investigating.
