Wildfire activity near Boston Bar in British Columbia's Fraser Canyon continues to pose a significant threat, with Highway 1 closed due to uncontrolled fires burning on both sides of the Fraser River. According to authorities, the closure is in place to protect public safety. Many residents have already left for safer locations, while others remain on alert as conditions continue to evolve.
Amid the emergency, Jagdeep Singh Bahl, owner of JB's Drive-In Restaurant near Highway 1, has opened his restaurant earlier than usual to provide meals for wildfire crews battling the blazes. Bahl said he is committed to supporting firefighters and other emergency personnel working in the area.
Bahl said supply deliveries have been disrupted because of the highway closure. To keep the restaurant operating, he has been transporting essential supplies from Surrey using his own van. He added that this is the most severe wildfire situation he has witnessed in the region over the past four years.
According to Bahl, fear and uncertainty have spread throughout the community. He said rainfall is now the community's greatest hope for slowing the fires and improving conditions.
Authorities say the Ainsley Creek wildfire has expanded to approximately 170 square kilometres. Nearby, the Brunswick Creek wildfire has also grown to more than 25 square kilometres. Wildfire crews continue suppression efforts as officials closely monitor the situation.
