Talks between Canada and the United States on a trade deal have reportedly gained momentum ahead of the US midterm elections in November. Sources say the White House has shown unprecedented interest in reaching an agreement over the past week, with potential progress on auto tariffs.
However, a final deal is not guaranteed, given President Donald Trump and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick’s previous positions. Speaking at a rally in Port Huron, Michigan, on Sunday, Trump signalled that a deal could be reached soon, accusing Canada of exploiting the United States for years while claiming Ottawa is now willing to make concessions.
Trump’s remarks come as the trade dispute with Canada emerges as a key issue ahead of the November midterm elections.
