Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says a possible peace agreement to end the long-running war with Russia could be finalized within the next few days following discussions with United States officials. He said Washington is leading renewed diplomatic efforts aimed at bringing the conflict to a negotiated close after years of fighting.
Zelenskyy told reporters that U.S. envoys are expected to present a draft framework to Moscow ahead of potential high-level meetings in the United States next week. He said Ukraine remains engaged in talks while seeking security guarantees and international support as part of any final agreement.
U.S. President Donald Trump has also expressed optimism, saying negotiations are closer to a breakthrough than at any previous stage. American officials have indicated that consensus has reportedly been reached on roughly 90 per cent of the proposed terms, although several sensitive issues remain unresolved.
The most significant obstacle continues to be the status of Ukrainian territories currently under Russian control. Ukrainian officials have consistently said territorial integrity is a core issue, while Russia has maintained competing claims over occupied regions.
The war, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, has had wide-reaching global impacts, including on energy markets, food supply chains and international security alliances. In Canada, the conflict has shaped foreign policy debates and prompted ongoing humanitarian and military support for Ukraine from Ottawa.
