U.S. Restrictions on Canadian Alcohol, Dairy and Motorcycles Take Effect Tuesday

Restrictions imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump on Canadian alcohol, dairy products and certain motorcycles entering the United States are set to take effect on Tuesday, September 29.

The restrictions cover Canadian whisky, beer, wine, vodka, rum and tequila. According to the Trade Commissioner Service, Canada exported about $1.36 billion worth of alcoholic beverages in 2023, with around 90 per cent going to the U.S.

The dairy-related measures mainly affect whey protein and other by-products associated with cheese production. Canada exported more than $700 million worth of dairy products to the U.S. in 2024.

The restrictions also include Canadian motorcycles with engine capacities above 800cc, as well as mopeds.

The measures come as there are few signs of an early end to the Canada-U.S. trade dispute. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer recently said Washington was in no rush to reach a trade deal with Canada.
