U.S. President Donald Trump has said the United States could assume responsibility for securing the Strait of Hormuz and should charge other countries that rely on the strategic waterway for its protection. According to Trump, the financial burden of safeguarding the route should not fall solely on the United States.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important maritime trade routes, carrying a significant share of global oil and natural gas shipments. Tensions between the United States and Iran over security in the waterway have intensified in recent months.
Meanwhile, Iran has warned that it will not accept any U.S. involvement in the management or security of the Strait of Hormuz. The warning was issued by Ebrahim Zolfaghari, spokesperson for Iran's Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters.
Zolfaghari said Iranian armed forces would respond to any actions outside maritime routes designated by Iran that they believe threaten regional security or disrupt maritime navigation.
